SANIYA GAY: Delaware Miss Juneteenth 2020
Talent: Dance (Ballet, Modern, and Contemporary)
Due to the violent relationship my sister endured, my commitment to domestic violence awareness and service to domestic violence victims inspired me to start an organization called, “Love Don’t Hurt”. I help domestic violence victims with toiletries and connect them to resources.
She began her dancing career 11 years ago at various local Dance Studios. Her main styles of dance are: Ballet, Modern, and Contemporary, with her focus on Ballet..
In the year of 2015, she started her own apparel business named, “Phat Prints” and “Boujee Bagz”, where she sells beauty accessories and she donated her funds to local non-profit organizations. Her peers would describe her as an ambitious and charismatic leader.
In 2018, Saniya started a dance team called “The Cavalettes.” Fellow team members noticed her leadership abilities and voted her captain, a position she currently holds. She auditioned for an opportunity to participate in the Philadelphia Thanksgiving Day Parade and was selected as a pilgrim.
In 2019, she received a special invitation to return as a background dancer for Grammy nominated singer and Philanthropist Aloe Blacc.
She did this while simultaneously being an active Junior Dance team member with the “Soulmates”, a Philadelphia Soul Football Dance team. She performs at the August Quarterly every year, located in Wilmington, Delaware.
In 2020, she hosted a Covid-19 Relief Drive, where she partnered with the Delaware Juneteenth Association that included a toiletry giveaway to the less fortunate.
She became a registered employee for the voting polls for the upcoming election.
Saniya also put together a PSA video to encourage all eligible voters to come out to submit their ballots.
Ms. Gay is looking to attend Howard University or North Carolina A&T.
Saniya states: “I pride myself in being a natural leader, a creative problem solver and a great communicator. These are all qualities that I believe are the characteristics the National Juneteenth Queen should possess.
The attributes I can bring to the program are great interpersonal skills, teamwork, and a strong work ethic.
Most importantly, it would be my honor to participate in the 1st National Miss Juneteenth Pageant, where I would bring a spirit of gratitude to the organization”.
